Watermelon Tourmaline is a striking variety of tourmaline (specifically elbaite) known for its colouring and resembling a slice of watermelon.
This colour zoning forms naturally as the crystal grows in stages, first pink (manganese-rich), then green (lithium/chromium influence).

Watermelon Tourmaline forms in pegmatites and hydrothermal environments, often linked to ancient volcanic activity. 
Cracks in cooling magma fill with mineral-rich fluids and layers crystallise over time, chemical changes produce the iconic colour zoning
