Mariposite is a blend of chromium rich green Mica which grows within quartz. This gives it that distinctive marbled green, yellow, white appearance. 
It was first discovered in Mariposa County, which is where it gets its name and California remains its most well-known source although it can also be found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains as well as other places around the world.
